Walailak University has achieved a global ranking in the 601–800 band and joint third place nationally in the disciplines of Clinical & Health and Social Sciences, as announced by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject.

Walailak University Achieves Global Recognition in THE World University Rankings by Subject 2025

Today (January 22, 2025) at 7:00 AM Thailand time, Times Higher Education (THE), a globally renowned university ranking organization, announced the results of the World University Rankings by Subject 2025.

Walailak University has shown outstanding performance in five academic disciplines, an increase from three disciplines ranked last year. The ranked subjects are:

  1. Clinical & Health
  2. Social Sciences
  3. Life Sciences
  4. Physical Sciences
  5. Engineering

The most notable achievement this year is in Clinical & Health, where Walailak University was ranked in the 601–800 band globally and joint 3rd nationally. This marks a significant improvement from last year’s ranking of 801–1000 globally and joint 4th in Thailand. In 2025, a total of 1,150 institutions from 102 countries were ranked in this subject, including 14 Thai universities.

Another highlight is the university’s debut in the Social Sciences, where it also ranked in the 601–800 band globally and joint 3rd in Thailand. This subject saw an increase in participating institutions, with 1,093 universities from 100 countries, up from 997 in 2024. Only 8 Thai universities were ranked in this category.

In Life Sciences, Walailak University maintained its position in the 801–1000 band globally and joint 9th nationally. For Physical Sciences, the university remained in the 1001+ band globally, but improved to joint 8th nationally, up from joint 9th last year. Lastly, in Engineering, Walailak University was ranked in the 1001–1250 band globally and joint 9th nationally, marking its first appearance in this category.

The THE World University Rankings by Subject 2025 are based on 18 performance indicators across five key areas:

  • Teaching
  • Research Environment
  • Research Quality
  • Industry Engagement
  • International Outlook

Each subject area has tailored weightings to reflect its unique characteristics. To be eligible for ranking, universities must meet minimum thresholds for research publications and academic staff in each subject over a five-year period (2019–2023).
