Walailak University has been ranked seventh among Thailand’s leading universities in the 2026 SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR), rising significantly from 12th place in the previous year.

The 2026 SCImago Institutions Rankings evaluate institutions worldwide based on their international performance in research, innovation, and societal impact using data indexed in Scopus. This year, 42 Thai universities met the assessment criteria and were included in the Higher Education category.

Walailak University achieved outstanding results, ranking seventh in Thailand, 449th in Asia, and 1,323rd globally. This represents a remarkable improvement from its 12th-place national ranking in 2025.

A closer examination of the assessment results reveals that Walailak University performed particularly well in research, placing among the top five universities in Thailand. Its rankings in each category are as follows:

• Research: 5th in Thailand, 260th in Asia, and 968th worldwide

• Innovation: 10th in Thailand, 1,073rd in Asia, and 2,060th worldwide

• Societal Impact: 16th in Thailand, 562nd in Asia, and 2,089th worldwide

The SCImago Institutions Rankings are internationally recognized as a highly credible system for assessing institutions with research performance at the global level. The evaluation is based on three principal dimensions: Research, weighted at 50%; Innovation, weighted at 30%; and Societal Impact, weighted at 20%.

Walailak University’s rise to seventh place nationally reflects its strong commitment to advancing research processes and generating new knowledge that meets international standards. These achievements benefit not only the academic community but also support the development of innovations that create positive impacts and contribute meaningfully to addressing challenges facing Thai and global societies.
