Walailak University Hosts Tribute and Memorial Ceremony for the Late Professor Dr. Wijit Srisuan, Founding President and Former Chairman of the University Council
On October 4, 2023, at 16:00, Professor Dr. Somphong Tamrongthanyawong, Acting President of Walailak University, led a memorial ceremony to honor the late Professor Dr. Wijit Srisuan, the founding President and former Chairman of the University Council. The event took place at the Thai Buri Auditorium, Building B, 9th Floor, Walailak University Medical Center, and was attended by over 1,000 people, including university executives, faculty, staff, and students.
Professor Dr. Wijit Srisuan was a distinguished scholar and educational administrator who played a crucial role in developing the Thai education system and Walailak University. He served as the founding President of Walailak University from 1992 to 1998 and continued as Chairman of the University Council from January 28, 2008, to June 30, 2021.
During his tenure, he was instrumental in shaping the university’s vision, policies, and organizational structure. His contributions include establishing the university as a state-controlled institution, advocating for good governance, and introducing various educational innovations such as cooperative education and a tri-semester system. His efforts ensured the university’s readiness to welcome its first students in 1998.
In his tribute, Professor Dr. Somphong Tamrongthanyawong highlighted Professor Dr. Wijit’s unwavering commitment and vision, which significantly impacted the university’s growth and global standing. Under his leadership, Walailak University achieved international recognition, including a ranking of 1201+ in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024.
The ceremony featured a heartfelt eulogy by Dr. Banchai Pongpanich, a former Vice President and co-founder of the university. Thai language students performed a poetic tribute, and attendees observed a moment of silence. The ceremony concluded with the singing of “Ruk Walailak” (Love Walailak), symbolizing the university community’s respect and affection for Professor Dr. Wijit Srisuan. Participants also signed the memorial book to honor his memory.
