On December 5, 2023, UI GreenMetric World University Rankings announced the results of the 2023 World Green University Rankings, which included 1,050 universities from 85 countries worldwide.

It was revealed that Walailak University has maintained its position as the top green university in Southern Thailand for four consecutive years. Additionally, it has risen to 6th place nationally and 83rd place globally, with a total score of 8,475 points. This is an improvement from the previous year, 2022, when it was ranked 7th nationally and 111th globally, with a total score of 8,125 points, and from 2021, when it was ranked 8th nationally and 116th globally, with a total score of 7,700 points. The university has increased its scores in every category out of the six categories assessed, which include: 1) Setting & Infrastructure, 2) Energy & Climate Change, 3) Waste Management, 4) Water Management, 5) Transportation, and 6) Education & Research.

In the Setting & Infrastructure category, Walailak University has achieved the highest score nationally for three consecutive years and is ranked 4th globally among the 47 universities in the country that participated in the green university ranking. The scores in other categories are as follows: Energy & Climate Change is ranked 7th nationally and 24th globally; Waste Management is ranked 4th nationally and 6th globally; Water Management is ranked 2nd nationally and 3rd globally; Transportation is ranked 2nd nationally and 4th globally; and Education & Research is ranked 11th nationally and 13th globally.

Under the leadership of Professor Dr. Somboon Thamrongthanyawong, the Acting President of Walailak University, the university has a clear policy to drive sustainable environmental management and conservation in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This encompasses all six categories of UI GreenMetric, from teaching and research to operations and daily life at the university. This includes energy management, waste management, water management, transportation systems, as well as environmental education and research. Walailak University is a model institution with comprehensive infrastructure and facilities, set within a beautiful landscape and a pollution-free environment, embodying the concept of a Green University.
