Walailak University and Indonesia’s Universitas Siliwangi Sign MoU to Advance Teacher Education Internationally and Strengthen ASEAN Academic and Research Collaboration

On 11 February 2026, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, and Professor Dr. Ir. Nundang Busaeri, Rector of Universitas Siliwangi (UNSIL), Republic of Indonesia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote cross-border teaching practicums and strengthen joint research. Executives from both institutions witnessed the signing ceremony at the Mokhalan Meeting Room, Professor Dr. Vichit Srisa-an Building, Walailak University.

The collaboration primarily aims to provide international teaching practicum opportunities for students from the Schools of Education at both institutions, equipping future teachers with a global outlook. It will also broaden cooperation in research, academic staff exchanges, and the joint organization of international academic conferences.

Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong stated that the signing of the MoU marks another important milestone in the continuously growing relationship between the two institutions. It also reflects their shared commitment to strengthening international cooperation in education, research, and academic exchange.

“This collaboration represents an important step toward fostering mutual understanding and knowledge exchange, ultimately benefiting students and faculty members from both institutions. In addition to advancing academic excellence, it will make a meaningful contribution to long-term human resource development across the ASEAN region and globally,” Professor Dr. Sombat said.

Professor Dr. Ir. Nundang Busaeri added that UNSIL places great importance on broadening students’ perspectives through international experiences and regards Walailak University as a key strategic partner. He noted that Indonesia and Thailand share close cultural ties and a common goal of advancing education in Southeast Asia.

“We are confident that the exchanges conducted under this MoU will produce sustainable outcomes and further strengthen the academic capabilities of both institutions,” the UNSIL Rector concluded.

This partnership arose from earlier discussions between the two institutions. In November 2025, Dr. Yusup Supriyono, Head of the English Education Department at UNSIL, visited the School of Education and the School of Liberal Arts at Walailak University to explore potential areas of collaboration, particularly student exchanges that would enable UNSIL education students to undertake teaching practicums in Thailand.

UNSIL students are currently completing their teaching practicums at several schools in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Krabi provinces, allowing them to gain valuable professional experience while learning about Thai culture.
